Job Opportunity: Weekend Receptionist – Two (2) Part-time Positions

The Ralph Thornton Community Centre (RTCC) is a City-owned, community-managed, dynamic neighbourhood centre involved in community development and social justice in South Riverdale. RTCC collaborates with others to create a diverse, inclusive, livable, participatory, healthy, and equitable community.

We are seeking two (2) people as receptionists to work Saturdays and Sundays, along with occasional weekday shifts. The person we are looking for in each of these positions:

  • Has a pleasant and welcoming attitude;
  • Enjoys talking with people from different backgrounds;
  • Is very organized and is able to follow systems and procedures; and,
  • Has good computer skills and is able to help others with using computers.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional first contact experience for all building users;
  • Follow opening and closing procedures as required;
  • Maintain the cleanliness and basic upkeep of the Exchange Loft and reception area;
  • Answer the main phone line, providing information, transferring calls, and taking messages;
  • Provide support to Exchange Loft users for scanning, faxing, copying, printing, and assistance with web and computer applications, as requested;
  • Respond to and process space booking requests;
  • Process payments for program registrations via cheque, cash, credit card, and debit card transactions;
  • Attend to minor custodial tasks and assist in room set up/tear down, as required;
  • Assist in preparing monthly calendar schedule of events/bookings for Reception and Maintenance;
  • Assist in preparing invoices for monthly billings;
  • If required, provide some administrative support to the Board of Management, possibly including attending monthly meeting, taking minutes, and preparing minutes and other documents for circulation;
  • Greet and assist visitors as necessary, providing information about the Centre and its programs and activities;
  • Provide detailed notes regarding problems or suggestions for improvement and completing incident reports as needed;
  • Respond to emergency situations and/or security issues, including contacting police, fire, or ambulance services when necessary;
  • Ensure that Centre users abide by the Code of Conduct and all safety, fire, and security regulations and procedures; and,
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Experience:

  • Experience with document management and digitization of records;
  • Experience with responsibilities supporting governance structures, including minute-taking at meetings;
  • Customer service experience, in either the public or private sector, including retail; and,
  • Experience (employment or volunteer) in a non-profit community organization an asset.

Skills:

  • Ability to perform required physical tasks, including using janitorial equipment, climbing ladders, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying moderate and heavy loads, furniture, materials/supplies;
  • Knowledge and experience with cleaning procedures and techniques;
  • Working knowledge of materials, basic plumbing, basic electrical, furniture, lighting, appliances, heating, fire extinguishers and alarms, etc.;
  • Working knowledge of personal and public safety systems and practices including safety regulations, use of personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, materials handling, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Able to understand WHMIS and safety regulations and perform tasks in a safe manner;
  • Knowledge of repairing plaster/drywall and painting an asset;
  • Working knowledge of a computerized environment e.g. internet and email;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to function effectively with supervisors, other staff, program participants and rental groups;
  • First Aid/Level C CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the contract);
  • Chinese language skills an asset; and,
  • Knowledge of the Riverdale community an asset;

A Vulnerable Sector Screening (police reference check) is required by the successful candidate prior to hiring.

Rate of Pay: $20.42 to $24.43 per hour (Wage Grade 4, CUPE Local 2998 Wage Schedule 2024)

Two positions to be filled:

  • 18.5 hours/week – Saturday & Sunday 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Mondays 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm
  • 11 hours/week – Saturday & Sunday 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Successful candidates will also be eligible for weekday relief shifts.  And possible shift of  approximately 3 hours in a month to attend evening Board of Management meeting.
