Ace and In Your Face

October 6 to December 22, 2023

“Heck ya I’m ace!!!!” by Mika Babineau (2018, 18×24 inch, Acrylic on stretch canvas)

I am a Toronto based artist that specializes in portraits and landscapes. Upon realizing that I was asexual during my college years I felt the need to educate and shed some light on the topic, a topic seldom, if ever, discussed. My “Ace And In Your Face” series does just that. By painting portraits of myself I explore various topics and themes pertaining to asexuality and answer commonly asked questions. Both my frustration at the lack of understanding as well as the pride I feel towards my asexuality are displayed in this series covering a wide range of emotions. I am challenging the viewers preconceived and limited notion of what they think asexuality is as well as showing how I overcame these notions myself.

About the Artist

Mika Babineau was born in Moncton, New Brunswick but always longed to be an artist in a big city. Once she graduated high school it was time for her to move on to a bigger city and move to Ontario. She was accepted in the art fundamentals program, then the visual creative arts program at Sheridan College and while there discovered her passion for painting, especially with acrylic paints. Mika creates portraits and landscapes bursting with colour energy and life that challenge the viewer to see beyond the beauty of the surface.
